Sri Lanka wants to expand air traffic cooperation with Russia
According to the Russian Satellite News Agency, Sri Lankan Transport Minister Bandura Gunawadena said in an interview that Sri Lanka hopes to expand cooperation with Russia in the field of transportation and air traffic.
Gunawardena said: "Sri Lanka plans to develop cooperation with Russia in the field of transportation, including expanding cooperation in air traffic and overall traffic." Russia and Sri Lanka resumed flight operations previously suspended due to the seizure of the Aeroflot passenger plane in October 2022. After the flight resumed, the Sri Lankan people greeted the first Russian plane to arrive in the country with dances and flowers.
On June 2, 2022, Aeroflot's Airbus A330-300 was seized in Sri Lanka, and Aeroflot soon suspended its flight to Colombo. The Russian Foreign Ministry protested to the Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia. Later, the Sri Lankan court ruled that the dispute between Aeroflot and Ireland’s Celestial Aviation Trading 10 Limited was of a purely commercial nature and should be resolved between the two parties without involving the government, and revoked the ban on the departure of Aeroflot passenger planes. Subsequently, the plane and its crew flew back to Moscow.
